The first chance Minty Wilcox gets in January 1899, she sets off to find a stenographer’s job in Kansas City. But her search is jinxed from the start. First, a soldier named Hanks falls backward down the steep Ninth Street Incline, site of the cable car line. Next, Clayton Cole, an old man with a gun and a badge, accuses Minty of murdering the soldier. Then Cole chases Minty away before she can find out if Hanks is alive, dying or dead. On Minty’s way home, a young, bearded stranger approaches her. Though he turns out to be her mother’s prospective boarder, Daniel Price stays a mystery in other ways. For instance, what was he really doing next door inside the house of the nosy Miss Agnes Shackleton? Minty barely has time to tell her mother about her jinxed morning when Miss Shackleton shows up and repeats malicious gossip about the Wilcox family. She even threatens to run the Wilcoxes out of the Quality Hill neighborhood. Before Mama can get rid of Miss Shackleton, who should show up but Clayton Cole, demanding the steep sum of one hundred dollars to forget what he claims he saw Minty do–murder Soldier Hanks. So there’s nothing for Minty to do but set aside her search for employment and go looking for Soldier Hanks. At Mama’s insistence, Daniel Price escorts her. Talk about nosy! Why else does Price keep showing up wherever Minty goes? Why else would he sneak into her room and look at her diary? (Thank goodness, she writes her installments in shorthand.) In spite of her efforts to clear her name, eventually bad luck spreads like a nasty cold from Minty to her entire family and to Mr. Daniel Price as well. Minty feels that she brought all these troubles to her family and friends, so she must set things right. This won’t be easy in Kansas City where, a hundred years ago, living could get downright deadly. January Jinx is Book 1 of the Calendar Mystery series that tells the story of Minty Wilcox and Daniel Price from newly met to newlywed and beyond in Kansas City, a place that could get downright deadly a hundred years or so ago. Praise for JANUARY JINX Book 1 of the Calendar Mystery Series The delightful, creative, and charming January Jinx introduces a terrific character in Minty Wilcox, a good old-fashioned cozy mystery persona who will surely be able to carry the planned-for series. It’s Minty who drives the readable narrative, and author Juliet Kincaid keeps the pace steady and fast at the same time for quite a readable experience . . . The unique setting of 1899 Kansas City is full of flavor that never overwhelms the story and the characters. With a terrific, original, but still comfortable series concept, there are certainly big things afoot for Juliet Kincaid and Minty Wilcox’s Calendar Mysteries.

Arminta (Misty) Wilcox watches a soldier fall off a landing near the train depot in Kansas City, and a man claiming to be a sheriff from a nearby Kansas town accuses her of pushing the man. This is in 1899. The West Bottoms is a dirty, dusty area filled with railroad tracks, shanties, and manufacturing plants. Nineteen-year-old Minty lives some blocks away on Quality Hill and is spunky and independent compared to other young women of the time.
We follow Minty through hilarious misadventures as she tries to clear her name and find out what happened to the soldier. She experiences a budding romance in the process. At the same time, we learn what Kansas City was like at the turn of the century, its layout and people. The author did extensive research so the dress, manners, occupations, and mores of the various social strata as well as her descriptions of the buildings and businesses would be authentic.
In the first book of this new cozy mystery series, bullheaded Minty’s humorous escapades keep us turning pages. The characters and setting jump off the pages and pull us into Kansas City as it was in 1900.

A well written mystery chalked full of KC history and historical landmarks. Great character development and story. I look forward to more mystery with these characters in the next Calendar Mystery Book.
Not bad but... I liked how heroine's parents had much less than a perfect marriage. I liked her determination to have a career. I did not like the "obvious" hero. I will read the next book to see if I like it more.
A very interesting mystery series. It takes place in 1899 in Kansas City! Minty Wilcox is a spunky main character who happens onto a love interest while carrying on her investigation. If you like historical mysteries, I would suggest you get a copy of this book! I am not sure how many books are in this series but I am definitely going to find out! Rich characters, deep background, engaging story. Very enjoyable book written by a very talented author!
A wonderfully written intriguing start to a promising detective series. The characters are refreshing and easy to love. So glad it is a series so I can continue this pleasant literary journey.
Captured me from the start! Characters grew to life in this first book in the calendar series. I already have February ready to go. I even plan to make a stop at the historic Savoy in downtown KC after the reference in the January book. Thanks for the historical detail... I love it!
What fun it is to read a mystery set in a different locale, Kansas City in this case. Set at the turn of the last century, the book is well-researched and the details of daily life are woven into the story so expertly that you are transported. The characters are lively and everything they do and think is suitable for the era. The main character, Minty Wilcox, is the kind of young woman you root for gutsy and daring for her time while still trying to maintain her manners. The love interest is fun, the plot engaging and the ending a surprise. Jump into another century with a rich variety of characters and have a good read.

This is what I consider a "No Fault" read. That is not easy to come by in my estimation but this novel fits the bill with it's good characterization, authentic setting and the turn the page excitement it endows on the reader. When I say no fault I think that is just what it is and even the descriptions and time element were just right. For an example, back then the Nelson Atkins Museum was not referred to as that; it was always "the art gallery." And that is exactly what the author called it. Thank you Judith for an amazine read.
